A HISTORY OF STRONG WOMEN

 Altrusa International of Anderson County was founded in 1964 by Clementine Denson, Beth Johnston, Lillian Pettiette, June Brede, Gladys Hardin, Helen Canady, Helen Swift Brooks, Hazel Averitte and Maxine Green.

Clementine Denson served as the club’s first President from 1964 to 1965. The club received its Charter in 1966 and District Nine Governor Helen Hooker swore in the first official board members in February 1966. Beth Johnston served as the first club president under the charter.

Dedicated to improving the lives of all citizens of Anderson County, Altrusa focuses on education and nutrition for all. Our service projects include:

• Providing school supplies to area elementary schools and providing educational scholarships to graduating seniors;
• Meals on Wheels;
• Anderson County Literacy Council;
• Anderson County Crisis Center;
• The Comforters organization; and,
• Backpacks for Kids

Our fundraising efforts include an annual chicken spaghetti luncheon as well as multiple raffles throughout the year.
We hold two meetings each month. The monthly business meeting is held at noon on the second Thursday of each month in the board room of the Palestine Senior Activity Center. The monthly program meeting is held at 6:30PM in the Magnolia Room of the Palestine Senior Activity Center on the fourth Thursday of each month, with the exception of November (held on the third Thursday) and December (no program meeting held).

The club’s Service Committee and Make a Difference Day Committee are always on the lookout for interactive projects that they can use to improve the lives of all living in Anderson County.
